Heidi Montag reportedly filed for legal separation from Spencer Pratt on Tuesday, June 8, in a bid to stop him from continuing to have access to her earnings.
An inexplicable fumble before the filing raised doubts once again that it may be another stunt from the fame hungry couple.
Heidi initially landed up at the wrong court - the County courthouse in Malibu instead of the one in Santa Monica.
However, a source told Radar Online that the couple's split is for real.
"As far as she's concerned the marriage is over," said the source.
"She's not quiet ready to file for divorce. She had great concern for her finances; Spencer has been spending what she considers to be her money," the source added.
Under state law, once Heidi files for separation her earnings will stop being community property.
